WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT SECURITY IN JOS!!!

THE WAY FORWARD
The year 2010 ended on a sad note in Nigeria, leaving in its wake, tales of sorrow and anguish, but in every situation we give thanks to God. The spate of bomb explosions going on in the country is increasingly disturbing; no day passes by without tales of a bomb explosion, foiled bomb explosion attempts, assassination and ethno-religious crisis. Today I will differ a bit from my usual topics and talk about this because it affects everybody and has been a means of end to many RawTalents in the country. It’s so unfortunate that the youths are used to perpetrate such heinous crimes. Coming to mine is the 24th night multiple bomb explosions in Jos, the Plateau State Capital, in which more than 80 people died and more sustained different levels of injuries. Am still wondering what the bombers where trying to achieve or prove, killing innocent citizens, women and children inclusive. The security system in the country is so pathetic, not only the security agencies are to be blamed but we the citizens too must share in the blame. How those bombs and weapons used, got into the state is still a mystery that needs to be unraveled or do we need to send able bodied men to the land of the dead to inquire for us like is done in the Nigerian movies (Igodo)? God forbid!
This fire service approach to everything in this country is worrying. After the January disturbances in some parts of Plateau State, soldiers and bands of mobile policemen were sent to the state to keep calm. They were very effective in the first 3-4 months; there were road check-ups here and there, patrol vans in every street. But as time went on they all lost concentration, as Soldiers were used to threaten debtors and they almost took up the local police work, “I go call soldier for you o!” became the new threat slang in town. The mobile police guys (SARS) in front of my house used every opportunity to shoot in the air and harass passersby. I was once a victim. Their first priority was pushed back and they were relishing the power that comes with putting on those uniforms. There have been tales of complicity of the security men in attacks and chaos in the state most time.
We the citizens have blames too. It seems like we do wait for disasters like this to jerk us up and make us security conscious. After the January crisis in the state, a lot

of streets formed their local security teams, they normally watch over their area day and night, security information was shared between these streets. Strangers were noticed by the ever vigilant residents of these streets and investigated. But Alas! As the shock of the crises started waning out, every one lost concentration and focus, the youths now found keeping vigil to protect their selves and their family, tiring and frustrating. The older men had no time giving their valuable advices. The end result is now what we are suffering.
Concluding, A thorough investigation should be carried out and the culprits, no matter their societal status are made to face the law as deterrent to others, prosecution and punishment of earlier arrested persons connected to the earlier crisis in the state should be done, security operatives most be warned to do their jobs and stop abuse of authority. Compensation of affected person should be hastened to cool nerves a bit. And finally we all must be SECURITY CONSCIOUS, report suspicious people and activities to the security operatives or street heads. To the federal government, don’t play politics with this, every citizen has a right to life. Religious heads most sensitize their followers on the need for peaceful co –existence and above all, we all need to put the country in PRAYERS! I always believe that security of life lies in the hands of God, but we also have to make our own efforts. if these crises keeps escalating unchecked. Then, the question soon will be WHO IS NEXT? I wish you the most prosperous year of your life now and the years to come. Happy New!
