THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN THE BEGINNING

I was in a commercial bus the other day and the radio was tuned to a popular radio station in Abuja. The presenter just introduced the next song on her playlist. It was Terry G’s “free madness”. As we were nodding our head and miming to the few lines we could understand and utter, a man in his late sixties (from his appearance though) said “children of nowadays! Na wetin be the meaning of this song naw, wey dey make una dey shake head like dis?” he asked to no one in particular, with a glinting eyes he went on recalling “the good old days”, when Nigeria was blessed with talented musicians, when there were no sequencing software to make beats for them, you will need a live band to play your song, when sponsorship were almost nonexistent, when there were no Glo to sign them as their ambassadors and pay them good money, no international TV stations like the MTV BASE, Channel O, Sound City to play their songs and give them international recognition they got with their raw talents. The good old days when music was a source of hope for the hopeless and strength for the weak, I wish these youths understand the power of music” he ended sadly shaking his head in a sign of resignation.

It got me thinking, what really went wrong? How did it get this bad that some on can just make noisy incantations over beats and we play them on our radio stations? Why are we neglecting the educational part of music? Who is responsible for this rot in the music industry? How can we salvage our dear music from these monsters who call their selves musicians? Is it really their fault? I have got all the answers you; join me as I treat these questions judiciously right here on your favorite blogger’s blog.
