Since His debut on the rap scene with his award winning single Crowd
Mentality, MI real name Jude Abaga has held us spell bound with amazing
delivery, articulate rhymes and sleek rhymes. No doubt the self acclaimed
African Rapper No1 is one of the most popular rapper among fans and Emcees
alike. Like any top artist such as Naeto C, Mode 9, Rugged Man, has a
rapping style that can be instantly recognized. For obvious reasons a lot
of aspiring rappers want to rap like him, some want to be successful like
him. I’m about to let you in on 10 things you need to know or do to be
more incredible than the Mr. Incredible himself MI. not necessary in this
order.
1.Celebrate where you came from:
M.I has never ceased showing love for J-Town (Jos), charity they say
begins at home. Rep your hood because they will be the ones with you when
the crowd leaves.
2.Rebrand Yourself:
It might amaze you to know that MI initially stood for Mission Impossible,
to make his mission possible; He had to rebrand Himself by changing his
name. You too must choose a name that is easy to sell to both your fans
and critics.
3.Believe in Yourself:
There Used to be a legend that says you cannot sell in naija if you don’t
rap in Pidgin English, Mode 9 started the murder of this legend, but it
was MI that pulled the last trigger that killed this. He gave hope to
rappers like Vector, Ice Prince etc. Be persistent in what you do so long
as you are good in it.
4.Learn From Your Role Models:
MI is a self professed fan of lil Wayne, Kanye west, Jay Z, Common.. He
has been able to incorporate these A-list rappers styles with his, you
hear him faking Wayne’s voice but spitting kanye kind of rhyme pattern.
The point here is, have someone you look up to, although I don’t encourage
swagger jacking.
5.Read:
This is what makes you different from other wack Emcees. The internet
offers you a lot of materials to read from and the more vocabularies you
have, the more rhymes you create. Listening to MI’s rhymes and flow, you
will know that it takes a lot of study.
6.Use Similes and Metaphors:
MI’s verses are laced with similes and metaphors. These figures of speech
add beauty to your rap. They make good punch lines. Check out a punch
line in his track African Rapper “rappers blowing up but am the catalyst”
from safe “I’m spitting like Machiavelli, am chilly inside your belly”.
7.Practice:
Ok now you were thinking it was only footballers that need practice right?
Now you know, you need to practice, rap as often as possible.
8.Show Respect:
Have you ever been to any show MI performs? He always plays samples of
Mode 9’s cry, Rugged Man’s Ruggedy Baba, Sauce Kid’s Shokoribobo etc; He
knows these guys paved the way for rappers like him to climb to the top.
Show respect for other Emcees in the game.
9.Get A Good Record Label/Management:
MI’s success story can’t be finished without the mention of Chocolate
City, Thumps up to Audu Maikori for recognizing a Raw Talent when he sees
one. A lot of Emcees careers die prematurely due to poor management/Label,
ask Danfo Drivers, Kelly Hansom etc. so before you sign those dotted
lines, make sure you read the conditions they are offering you.
10.Pray:
I don’t need to explain anything about this all I can say is PRAY!!
